Organic Farming in Alentejo
Hello and welcome to Monte do Ceitil! We are Joao and Maureen, a Portuguese-American couple living between a historic house on a hilltop in Lisbon and the villages and vineyards of Alentejo. Monte do Ceitil is our organic farm, located near Estremoz in Alentejo, a vast region (by Portuguese standards!) south and east of Lisbon, and just bumping up against the Spanish border.
The farm is located on 6 hectares (approximately 15 acres) in a valley at the foot of the Serra D’ossa mountains. We bought the farm in 2017 and with that, inherited more than 100 orange and olive trees as well as a collection of houses and outbuildings. We’ve begun renovating all of the buildings and are busy planting fruit trees, indigenous pines and oaks, as well as dedicating 2 hectares to vineyards. Soon enough, we’ll open one of the houses for vacation rentals, and an old flour mill will be converted to a space for food and wine workshops.
And there’s more: our first production of olive oil has arrived. Hand-picked, cold-pressed, organic extra virgin olive oil that is alive with the flavor of our own Galega olives. And the oranges – Ceitil has always been well-known for its oranges – and we know why. They are the sweetest we’ve ever tasted.
If you’d like more information about buying olive oil or oranges, about our food & wine tours, or if you’d like to just say hello, please contact us by phone, email or visit us at Grape Olive Pig.
We can’t wait to see you!
